  • Team of 5 starting Nethermost Gully when hit by large avalanche from above
  • Significant amounts of new snow, westerly winds loading lee slopes and poor visibility
  • Cornice collapse from Left Branch at 10:30am
  • One climber carried 100m, one 25m and two 10m all with minor injuries
  • Avalanche fan 100m long by 30m wide
  • Equipment buried

Nethermost Gully Cornice Collapse

  • Climbing party of two hit by cornice collapse possibly caused by another party
  • Second climber was swept from stance dragging leader from plateau where they had already topped out to the right of the main cornice
  • Leader was partially buried, severe concussion & crampons lacerations to knee and calf
  • Second suffered a smashed left tibia & ankle, double break in left fibia, unspecified break to right leg & 2 broken ribs
  • Elderly walker also swept down in run out, shocked but uninjured
